September 19, 2007 Alert from Don Jewell
TWO MORE OF OUR RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN HIT BY THIEVES. BOTH LIVE NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE ISLAND. BOTH WERE HIT MONDAY NIGHT AND BOTH BELIEVE THEIR VEHICLES WERE UNLOCKED. ONE LOST A CELL PHONE THAT WAS IN THEIR VEHICLE. THE OTHER LOST A GPS AND CAMERA VALUED AT $1000. ONE OTHER VEHICLE WAS RANSACKED, BUT NOTHING OF VALUE WAS IN THE VEHICLE TO STEAL.
WE MAY HAVE A LEAD ON THE VEHICLE THAT WAS INVOLVED. ONE OF OUR RESIDENTS WAS COMING HOME AROUND 11:00 AND SAW A SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE AND OCCUPANTS NEAR THE MAIL BOXES. HE CALLED OUR HOUSE AND I WAS NOT AWAKE, BUT MY WIFE CALLED THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.
THERE WERE 3 MEN ALL DRESSED IN BLACK SWEAT PANTS AND LONG SLEEVED BLACK SWEAT SHIRTS AND DARK CAPS, LIKE STOCKING CAPS. THEY WERE DRIVING AN OLDER WHITE CHEVROLET CUSTOMIZED VAN WITH RUST ON IT. THE DISTINGUISHING MARK WAS A SLIDING DOOR THAT WAS COVERED WITH CARDBOARD.
WE SHOULD ALL BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THIS VEHICLE OR ANY OTHER SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY. IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN VEHICLES THAT ARE UNLOCKED AT THIS TIME. IF YOU DO COME HOME OR LEAVE AT ODD HOURS OF THE EVENING, PLEASE DRIVE THE ENTIRE ISLAND AND LOOK FOR ANY SUSPICIOUS HAPPENINGS.
September 10, 2007 Theft Notice
Last night our minivan (normally locked) was rummaged thru and some CD’s and a portable DVD player stolen (cabin #6).
I just got an e-mail from Mindy Simon (cabin #39) who said her garage had been ransacked about 3 weeks ago (several things broken, but nothing missing), and their car was rummaged thru last night as well.
We will be contacting the Sherriff’s department this evening. If anyone else experienced similar events recently, please let me know.
In the meantime, please remember to lock all your doors and vehicles. -Cheri
September 10, 2007 Note from Don Jewell on Middle Island
ONE OF OUR NEIGHBORS AT THE SOUTH END OF THE LAKE REPORTED THAT A SMALL AMOUNT OF CASH AND SOME PERSONAL ITEMS WERE STOLEN FROM A VISITORS CAR LAST WEEKEND.
THERE WERE SEVERAL CARS THERE AND THIS WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT WAS BURGLARIZED. IT WAS ALSO THE ONLY ONE THAT WAS NOT LOCKED.
PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT AS THEY MIGHT BE BACK.
September 11, 2007 Theft Update
Mary Vap’s (cabin #1) car doors were wide open Sunday morning when she went to get in it for church. No valuables were left in the car, so nothing was stolen.
Larry Wade found a wallet early Sunday morning along the road near Ellsworth’s (cabin #44) belonging to an Omaha man. He mailed the wallet back to the owner yesterday, but has the name and address, so the sheriff can follow up.
Arline & Tracy Nelson (cabin #23) found a flashlight (not belonging to them) outside their door/windows on their back patio. They also spotted a red car at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning acting suspiciously.
If anyone else has any information, please contact Cass County Deputy Eva Peterson at 296-9370 or toll free 800-527-3699.
Be aware of your surroundings, Make sure your motion lights are working, and Lock your doors! Please tell your neighbors who might not have e:mail to do the same.
Algae bloom
A lot of concern has been expressed about the algae bloom which occurred in the last week. I have requested a lake test kit from the Nebraska Dept. of Environmental Control but it will be several (maybe 10) days before we get any results. In the meantime there is a website to go to which will describe the conditions for blue green algae and toxic algae. Out lake meets most, if not all of the conditions. You should look at the information then decide for yourself if you want to swim, ski, tube or let your pets in the water. Here is the website - http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/newsroom/newsreleases/2006/May/toxicalgae.htm Please keep in mind not all bluegreen algae is toxic and it is not understood why some bluegreen algae becomes toxic. We had similar conditions last but about 2 weeks earlier. Both test results last year were negative for toxins. -Bruce Skinner
Notice from Western Sand and Gravel
Due to erosion, noise and dust WS&G said there will be ABSOLUTELY NO vehicles of any type ridden on the make shift track between the two lakes. This is the area directly adjacent BBB. Anyone riding in this area will risk having their off road vehicles banned for the rest of the summer or possibly banned from the lake permanently.

4th of July Safety
With the upcoming holiday week, the amount of boat traffic on the lake will be at maximum capacity.
Slow traffic (pontoons) must stay toward shore during daylight hours so fast boats and those pulling water toys and skiers can pass to the left of them without driving left of center. Driving left of center is acceptable only when necessary due to congestion, and then only when there is no hazard to traffic from the other direction. Pulling your throttle back and dropping your skier is a better option than trying to drive through congestion or worse, down skiers and tubers.
Swimmers, paddle boats/canoes and other non-motorized boats need to stay even closer to shore when the lake is busy. Lake rules state that the maximum distance from shore is 25 feet for swimmers & paddle boats.
Residents are reminded that they are responsible for their guests and to advise them of the rules. It is usually guests, rather than residents, that swim too far from shore and have to be instructed back.
It is Nebraska law that any child under the age of 13 needs to wear a life jacket if they are on a boat. For your reference, here is the website for the Nebraska Game and Parks boating: www.ngpc.state.ne.us/boating/guides/boating/BGrules.asp
If you have questions, please contact a member of the safety committee (Bob Ellsworth, Greg Ellsworth, Mike Lemmers, Roger VanDeventer, Phil Lagoni, Ted Hubbard), or click here to for a complete copy of our rules.
Have a safe & Happy 4th of July!
North Lake Announcements
Hello North Lake residents. At our Monthly meeting Saturday, it was noted that construction is to begin on the pavilion expansion. Since bids were hard to get we are starting with the money we have on hand. Jim McCabe has offered to match “dollar for dollar” all donations between now and July 4th up to $500. The Lemmers family will match donations for the second $500 raised. I know everyone has been asked numerous times for money for an array of causes, but remember this is our pavilion and all North Lake residents can reserve the pavilion and BBB at no cost. Please checks or cash to Dale Engelking and note that it is for pavilion. Thank you, the Board
Hello North Lake residents,
After conversations and emails with Ross at WS&G, they have decided to remove the dumpster. They are also removing the burn pile. We will have a board vote this Saturday if we want the dumpster back. At this time there is NO option about the burn pile returning. Last year we paid in excess of $10,000 for the dumpster. We are told we pay $40+ per hour to have the burn pile burn. In addition to this, we pay a substantial amount to remove items illegal to be put in the land fill. These include: tire, batteries and appliances. There will be signs going up this Saturday stating no dumping of ANYTHING. There is also a possibility of a $250 fine for ANY dumping.
The majority of the lake residents are paying for the abuses of a few. No one thinks this is fair. -North Lake Park Association Board
Donations are still being accepted for fireworks. Only $5,000 has been collected so far. Please send your check immediately to Dale Engelking at 16520 Lake Park Drive, South Bend, NE 68058.

Mountain Lion Alert
WE HAVE 3 REPORTS OF MOUNTAIN LIONS IN OUR AREA:
A FEW MONTHS AGO, JODY PARKS SPOTTED ONE WHILE 4 WHEELING NEAR MURDOCK, ABOUT 5 MILES SOUTH OF HERE.
ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, JERRY LAUGHLIN AND HIS DOG WERE WALKING AROUND THE LAKE ON RIVER SIDE NEAR THE WALKING BRIDGE. HIS DOG WENT INTO THE WOODS AND CAME BACK ON THE DEAD RUN. JERRY SAID THERE WERE SOUNDS LIKE A BIG CAT THERE AND EVACUATED THE AREA
JUST 2 DAYS AGO, BUNNY SCHRUNK WAS COMING HOME FROM WORK AND A MOUNTAIN LION RAN RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER CAR NEAR THE MIDDLE ISLAND ARCHES NEAR THE RR TRACKS. THIS IS A DEFINITE SIGHTING.
I THOUGHT WE SHOULD LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THEY ARE IN THE AREA. THEY USUALLY DO NOT BOTHER PEOPLE, ALTHOUGH YOU NEVER KNOW. JOHN SCHRUNK READ UP ON THEM AND SAID IF YOU ARE CONFRONTED BY ONE, THE BEST POLICY IS TO GET AGRESSIVE AND SHOW YOUR TEETH AND MAKE A LOT OF NOISE. THIS SHOULD FRIGHTEN THEM AWAY.
IF ANYONE ELSE SPOTS ONE, PLEASE LET US KNOW. BUNNY DID CONTACT THE CASS COUNTY SHERIFF AND THEY SAID ANOTHER ONE WAS REPORTED NEAR HERE NOT TOO LONG AGO.
AND ABOVE ALL, REMEMBER THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ABLE TO OUTRUN ONE OF THEM, JUST BE ABLE TO OUTRUN SOMEONE THAT IS WITH YOU.
HAPPY HUNTING, Don Jewell
